The history of the Terme di Saturnia dates back to the Etruscan-Roman era when the site, due to its characteristic water at a constant temperature of 37.5 degrees, became a real spa holiday resort. The name Saturnia is instead linked to a legend: thegod Saturn, in a fit of anger against the human race, would have hurled a bolt of lightning so powerful as to create a small crater and cause a spring of boiling sulphurous water to gush forth. Today that place coincides exactly with the "source pool" of the Terme di Saturnia.
