Located in the province ofMessina, the village of Milazzo overlooks the small port of Santa Maria Maggiore from which ships and ferries depart daily for theAeolian Islands. Milazzo has always been the main point of passage for the many tourists who, especially in summer, treat themselves to a holiday betweenLipari, Salina,Volcano, Stromboli, Panareaand the small Filicudi eAlicudi. Not everyone knows, however, that inside there are real treasures ready to be discovered.
WHAT TO SEE IN MILAZZO (MESSINA)
A good starting point for this walking itinerary between Milazzo and its village could be the seat of the Municipality of Milazzo, in the seafront area. From here, walking along Via Marina Garibaldi, you can come across the Statue of Liberty and thePalazzo D'Amico, residence of one of the wealthiest Milazzo families, which today houses the Municipal Library. Taking the Via del Quartiere uphill you will finally reach the actual Borgo.
Here stands theSanctuary of San Francesco da Paola, with the next to itDomenico Ryolo Ethnoanthropological and Naturalistic Museum. Continuing, on the right, stands thePalace of the Viceroys and Governors, at the foot of the real jewel: theCastle.
Known as theFortified Citadel of Milazzo, the Castle is surrounded by a Spanish wall whose entrance opens under theBulwark of Santa Maria. As you enter and walk towards its nucleus, you can see the styles and dominations that have passed here and made its history flow. In fact, from the prehistoric center that stands in the northern part, the expansion of the Castle was characterized by Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Arab influences, until Frederick II of Aragon made it his favorite residence.
Inside it is possible to admire theAncient Cathedral, the remains of thePalace of the Jurors and the Keep, center and true nucleus of the Citadel, which stands on a cliff of about 100 meters. It is accessed through theDoor of Santa Maria. As you walk, keep your eyes sharp because on one of the spurs that looks towards Capo Milazzo you will find theMagical Scarab. At his feet, along the Tono beach, is thePolyphemus Cave. Legend has it that in that area Ulysses managed to escape Polyphemus while he threw a boulder at him.
Once the tour of the Milazzo Castle, a true jewel of the province of Messina, is concluded, the advice is to move by car towards the Capo promontory where the fascinatingPools of Venus. Here you will find thetrekking routewhich, between stairways and rocks, will lead you to this little corner of paradise.
