Traveling in the Sahara desert: excursions and nights under the stars

byVerónica Crocitti

Imagine finding yourself in a Berber tent, among very high sand dunes, surrounded by a silence so deafening as to seem unreal. Imagine looking up, towards a blue night sky, towards bright stars that seem to wink back at you. And then imagine waking up at dawn, when the sun begins to peep out, and finding yourself on the back of a dromedary exploring the meanders of the sandiest dunes, before the heat gets too intense. This is theSahara desert, this is the heart of theMorocco, and now I tell you how it is possible to make this dream a reality.

Sahara Desert - Morocco

Excursion to the Sahara desert

Among the best things to do and see in Morocco, the Sahara desert excursion is sure to top the list. There are many ways to be able to experience a walk among the sand dunes on the back of a dromedary, but my advice is to stop in the desert for at least one or two nights. Sleeping in a Berber tent, savoring the cuisine of the heart of Morocco, letting yourself be lulled by the dances and music of the Bedouins, is something you will truly never forget. For all life.

WHERE TO SLEEP IN THE SAHARA DESERT: Find all the offers

There are many local tour operators that carry out excursions to the Sahara desert from the main cities of Morocco such as Casablanca, Tangier,Marrakesh, Chefchaouen, Rabat, Fez orEssaouira. Trek tours can last two, three or four days and always include nights in a Berber camp (prices vary depending on the type of camp you decide to choose) with Berber dinner and walk (at sunrise or sunset) on the back of a dromedary included.

If you are planning a "do it yourself" trip with an excursion in the Sahara Desert

If your intention is to organize a "do-it-yourself" trip to Morocco, I still advise you to join some local agency for the excursion in the Sahara desert as public connections in the country are not at all regular and reach the camping alone is extremely risky.

WHERE TO SLEEP IN THE SAHARA DESERT: Find all the offers

Among the many companies I've had the opportunity to get in touch with, there is one that I consider highly qualified and complete, also due to the variety of offers it offers. It's about theTrek Morocco Desert Tour which, in addition to the specific excursion in the Saraha desert, offers complete tours to visit the entire country.

If you are looking for a complete tour in Morocco

The Trek Morocco Desert Tourorganizes tours for Italian groups all year round with departures from the main cities of Morocco. Among the best experiences, trips during the Christmas and New Year periods stand out, both for 2021 and 2022 (when temperatures are not high and it is easier to enjoy the usually torrid places), trekking in places in the Atlas mountain range and tours of the Imperial Cities (to which I always recommend adding the Sahara desert experience, if it's not already included).

In particular, the agency organizes excursions to the desert, to Fes or Chefchaouen, to the Sahara Merzouga, the dunes of Chigaga Erg and the oases of Zagora. Sahara desert tours last 2/3/4/5 or 7 days and the departure cities are Marrakech or Tangier (with stops in Agadir, Meknes, Casablanca, Rabat and Merzouga erg chebbi dunes.
Note well! Following the Covid-19 emergency it is possible, for 2021/2022/2023, to take land excursions and day trips directly from international cruises and from Tui, Msc, Norwegian Cruise Line ships that dock in Tangier, Tetouan, Agadir and at the port of Casablanca.

Ciao Alice, grazie mille! Sì, è un viaggio che consiglio davvero col cuore. Sai che non conoscevo questo tipo di peperoncino? A questo punto sarò costretta a tornare per assaggiarlo 😉
